Kathleen Dustin
CONTEMPORARY ALTERNATIVE
Contoocook, NH
Kathleen Dustin has been a pioneer in the medium of polymer clay, along with noted artists like Tory Hughes and Pier Voulkos. Dustin’s fascination with the potential of the material, particularly pushing its limits in its ability to imitate other objects, like stone or wood, is readily apparent. She also paired polymer with other objects, such as actual wood burls, to form organic compositions.
Her most startling work has been in making the clay as thin as possible, mimicking fabric, for the clothes of her voluptuous Turkish harem figures. This necklace, which was featured in Ornament Magazine, was purchased by Carolyn, in recognition both for the virtuosity of talent demonstrated in the piece, and its sensual depiction of feminity.
