Mary Jaeger
SHIBORI HAND-DYEING, PIECING
Brooklyn, NY
Texture and brilliant hues are the hallmark of Mary Jaeger’s hand-dyed textiles. Using both natural and recycled vintage fabrics, she uses shibori, the traditional Japanese method of shape-resist dyeing, to coax bold colors and patterns onto their surface. Many of her coats and scarves are pieced together from multiple long strips of fabric, such as her sculptural Accordion Scarf and Duster. World travel and other cultures also inspire her work. A recent 2023 trip to Uzbekistan gave her a bounty of visual riches, as well as the opportunity to purchase several Uzbek suzanis and ikats, that she has repurposed and transformed into magnificent, vibrant outerwear.
