Brooch by Reiko Ishiyama of sterling silver, vermeil, 2013?

Reiko Ishiyama

CONTEMPORARY PRECIOUS
New York, NY

Reiko Ishiyama has for a long time realized that precious metals need not be presented ostentatiously. Creating miniature abstract sculptures with her brooches, Ishiyama’s work resembles leaves trembling in the wind, and other diaphanous creations. My mother awarded her the Smithsonian Craft Show Prize for Excellence in Jewelry, recognizing the quiet contemplation of nature that is at the heart of Ishiyama’s style.

Reiko, my mother and Mina Norton were all good friends, and we occasionally ate dinner with both artists. This exchange in conversation, and good food, was an important part of my mother’s relationship with Reiko.
